Who is Vivian Krause?

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Vivian Krause considers herself a citizen activist, but City Caucus conveniently left out huge chunks of information about her past.

Yesterday, Mike Klassen of City Caucus posted a piece from Vivian Krause concerning the donors to Vision Vancouver and Mayor Gregor Robertson’s campaigns.

As a preamble to the post, Vivian Krause is described as “an expert on the complex subject of charitable foundation money flowing into British Columbia for a variety of activist causes.”

The conveniently excluded depth behind who this woman is, however, is far more interesting.

The NPA does something smart for once

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Damn it.  I had such high hopes for Bill McCreery and his silly plans.  In consideration of the overwhelming response against the idea, however (36-6 – I know, what a crowd!), I guess that the remaining NPA membership that give a shit about the association are waking up to the fact that a name change isn’t going to be the factor that brings them back from the precipice.

I, like Frances, am also going to try and get some more details from the meeting.

City of Vancouver releases plan to mitigate impact of new street vendors

Competition for Japadog, which for years has become Vancouver's number one street food attraction, is going to have to pony up a significant investment to participate in the upcoming pilot project.

While the plan to introduce new culinary options to Vancouver streets has generally been a welcome decision by most Vancouverites, there were a number of concerns voiced by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association.

Quite simply, the $1,000 licensing fee that these new locations would be required to pony up for the city seemed to undercut restaurants downtown who pay through the teeth for their location.  Rent, taxes and parking alone make any downtown food proprietor a brave soul that puts their money where their mouth is.

Well, Charles Gauthier et al. should be happy with the following curbside parking fees that will most definitely weed out those vendors who are looking for an inexpensive path to a downtown location.

Waiting for Vancouver’s housing bubble to pop

Posted by Jonathan Ross

$1 million? Not quite, but a modest east side bungalow like this is still way of the price range of myself and many other potential first time buyers.

This game, which I discovered from this fascinating Bloomberg article, is silly and deliberately off in terms of the pricing for its “mansions.”  But it make a sobering prove a point.

The point is that young people – my generation of first time HOME buyers (this does not refer to condos) – have only one feeling when thinking about purchasing a home in the city of which I was born (yes, one of the few): hopelessness.

So professionals like Robert Hogue, a senior economist at RBC Royal Bank, say that “The type of price increases that we’ve seen in Vancouver are unlikely to be sustained.  There might be some downside risk to that market.”

OK.  I suppose that should provide some kind of hope…right?

Wrong.

FACT OF THE DAY

In 2010, Vancouver had fewer than half the number of murders than it had in 2009.  There were nine homicides within Vancouver’s city limits, down from 19 killings the previous year.

Quote OF THE DAY

“Perhaps it was my silk dress or the new perfume I’ve been wearing lately. When I asked Suzanne Anton what her New Year’s resolution was, she replied, “To kiss a pretty girl!” and pecked me on the cheek.”  – Writer Emily Barca describing her encounter with the lone NPA City Councillor on New Year’s Eve.
