Rationalizing decision making with consultation

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Mayor Gregor Robertson's plans with regards to bike lanes and the establishment of a cycling infrastructure were never hidden from the public.

It has been a common theme from Vision Vancouver opponents and haters to claim that the party is running roughshod  over the public will, whether it is in regards to dedicated bike lanes or increasing rental housing stock.

I call BS with these kinds of claims, largely because I believe that the whole debate regarding consultation on some of these initiatives already happened to a large extent.

How?

Here’s how:

Bike lane opponents prefer anecdotal impressions over facts

Posted by Jonathan Ross

The traffic numbers are slowly going up for the Dunsmuir bike lane, in spite of those who are attempting to cast doubt as to the accuracy of the data.

The bike lanes tend to be a topic of conversation with those that know I have an interest in municipal politics.

Of course, the ones that feel the need to speak to me tend not to be supporters or even indifferent to them, because as is the usually the case, it is the opponents that are the first to voice their opinions.

And, I have heard of the usual responses from these people before:

“No one uses the lanes.  There is no traffic on them.”

“The biking lobby have co-0pted the Mayor’s office to the detriment of drivers.”

“The amount of cyclists in this city do not warrant this kind of expense.”

But yesterday the City released the first figures to emerge from the Dunsmuir bike lane trial, and the numbers show that the intent of increasing cycling traffic into the downtown core is showing signs of success (although I have no idea how they came up with the 250% increase – my math says 300).

What comes next for the detractors?  Well, they attack the accuracy of the statistics, making ridiculous statements like “The figures the city has published about bike riders are absolute rubbish – if they were even remotely true, you would always see many, many more bike riders on Burrard Bridge – but you can never see more bike riders than pedestrians, never, regardless of the time of day.”

Here, however, are a few things to consider.

What century does Bruce Allen live in?

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Allen's dating himself with his archaic views of what modern transportation should look like.

For at least a year, one of Bruce Allen’s favourite topics for his inane “Reality Check” segments on CKNW have been the bike lane trials and more broadly, City Council’s support to increase cycling in Vancouver.

You see, in Bruce’s world, you get with his program, or you get run over.  This is the kind of attitude that propelled him to make the following comments about immigrants back in 2007:

“If you choose to come to a place like Canada, then shut up and fit in.” (although he later clarified that xenophobic statement, so all is clearly forgotten)

But rather than be offensive in his latest rant, Allen shows himself to be a true fossil when it comes to his views on cycling and those who support it.

FACT OF THE DAY

In 2010, Vancouver had fewer than half the number of murders than it had in 2009.  There were nine homicides within Vancouver’s city limits, down from 19 killings the previous year.

Quote OF THE DAY

“Perhaps it was my silk dress or the new perfume I’ve been wearing lately. When I asked Suzanne Anton what her New Year’s resolution was, she replied, “To kiss a pretty girl!” and pecked me on the cheek.”  – Writer Emily Barca describing her encounter with the lone NPA City Councillor on New Year’s Eve.
