An Ian Robertson update

Posted by Jonathan Ross

I have been delinquent with my follow-up on this post regarding Park Board commissioner Ian Robertson’s unauthorized use of the Park Board logo on his webpage.  Reader Brent Granby, however, decided to take up the cause, and just posted this comment:

“I spoke with Anita Ho at VPB and she stated that there is no policy on this matter, but only guidelines. I ask her if it was appropriate for a commissioner to have the logo on the their website and she said that it was not. Anita said she would ask Ian to take the logo off the his website. It will be interesting to see if he will compile with the request. I spoke with her on October 5.

Interesting to note as well, the VPB logo is not a register trade mark.

There is a real need for policy work here by the VPB. There needs to be clear policy on the appropriate uses of the logo.”

As of the time of this posting, Robertson hasn’t taken anything down.

Anton achieves total independence

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Remember the motion put forward by Councillor Suzanne Anton calling for an affirmation of the Park Board’s independence?  How about the accompanying press release, which claims that “the General Manager of the Park Board has always been hired by the Park Board independently of the City,” even though:

20042

That legal opinion was released, by the way, when Anton was a Park Board commissioner who stayed silent about the interpretation at the time.

Suzanne Anton carves out her line in the sand, conveniently in the shape of the number of seconders she was able to attract for her important and pressing motion.

Regardless, the motion was finally up for debate yesterday.  Anton, however, was unable to find a seconder, which means it died on the order paper without debate.

Why did that happen?  Well, let’s examine the facts about what Anton claims is the “emasculation” of the Park Board.

As publicly stated by Park Board Chair Raj Hundal:

The Park Board will be conducting an open recruitment and hiring process.

The exercise will included input from City of Vancouver staff.

However, the final decision on hiring a new General Manager will be made solely by the Park Board.

Yesterday, Anton was able to secure a measure of independence as a result of her motion.  Unfortunately for her, it had absolutely nothing to do with the Park Board, whose independence is not in question by anyone but the lone NPA councillor.

A few framing queries

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Which City of Vancouver elected official wanted taxpayers to pay the costs of their return from vacation so that they could attend a meeting?

CivicScene is working on providing that answer for readers very soon.

On a completely unrelated matter, does NPA park board commissioner Ian Robertson have the proper authorization to be using the Vancouver Park Board official logo on his personal website, which also happens to have his party’s logo on the same page?  Maybe some of our readers from within the Park Board can answer that question, anonymously or otherwise.

City Manager well within rights regarding Park Board

Posted by Jonathan Ross

This memo from Frances J. Connell, Vancouver Director of Legal Services, to City Council and the City Manager confirms the place of the Park Board within the city’s hierarchy as laid out by the Vancouver Charter.

The document is very telling in terms of roles and responsibilities, as well as a chain of command, but the most pertinent paragraph is the following:

FACT OF THE DAY

In 2010, Vancouver had fewer than half the number of murders than it had in 2009.  There were nine homicides within Vancouver’s city limits, down from 19 killings the previous year.

Quote OF THE DAY

“Perhaps it was my silk dress or the new perfume I’ve been wearing lately. When I asked Suzanne Anton what her New Year’s resolution was, she replied, “To kiss a pretty girl!” and pecked me on the cheek.”  – Writer Emily Barca describing her encounter with the lone NPA City Councillor on New Year’s Eve.
