Vancouver Park Board has no legal protection over its own logo

Posted by Jonathan Ross

I finally received a call back from Peter Kuran, who as a result of Susan Mundick’s immediate departure, has now risen to the position of acting General Manager for the Vancouver Park Board.

First, I was told that Anita Ho, the Director of Corporate Services, had also received another inquiry besides CivicScene’s regarding Ian Robertson’s use of the Vancouver Park Board logo on his personal and partisan website. In fact, it was Ho that added the “Proudly 1 of 7 Elected Officials of the” to the logo to try and smooth things over.

In consideration of the fact that this logo is a representation of a public entity, I didn’t feel that this was sufficient, hence my follow-up with Kuran.

Want to use this on your website? Feel free, because you are unlikely to get much pushback from the Vancouver Park Board.

What I discovered in our conversation, however, was very surprising to say the least.

Anton achieves total independence

Posted by Jonathan Ross

Remember the motion put forward by Councillor Suzanne Anton calling for an affirmation of the Park Board’s independence?  How about the accompanying press release, which claims that “the General Manager of the Park Board has always been hired by the Park Board independently of the City,” even though:

20042

That legal opinion was released, by the way, when Anton was a Park Board commissioner who stayed silent about the interpretation at the time.

Suzanne Anton carves out her line in the sand, conveniently in the shape of the number of seconders she was able to attract for her important and pressing motion.

Regardless, the motion was finally up for debate yesterday.  Anton, however, was unable to find a seconder, which means it died on the order paper without debate.

Why did that happen?  Well, let’s examine the facts about what Anton claims is the “emasculation” of the Park Board.

As publicly stated by Park Board Chair Raj Hundal:

The Park Board will be conducting an open recruitment and hiring process.

The exercise will included input from City of Vancouver staff.

However, the final decision on hiring a new General Manager will be made solely by the Park Board.

Yesterday, Anton was able to secure a measure of independence as a result of her motion.  Unfortunately for her, it had absolutely nothing to do with the Park Board, whose independence is not in question by anyone but the lone NPA councillor.

Hundal calls for infrastructure dollars for SE seniors centre

Posted by Jonathan Ross

I researched and wrote this funding proposal for the Southeast Vancouver Seniors’ Arts and Cultural Centre Society (SVSACS), which since the early 1990’s, has been petitioning all levels of government for a dedicated seniors centre on the land next to the Killarney Community Centre.

Southeast Vancouver has a glaring void of resources for seniors in comparison to the rest of the city.

Southeast Vancouver has a glaring void of resources for seniors in comparison to the rest of the city.

As the proposal outlines, there are currently nine seniors centres in Vancouver, none of which are located in the southeast quadrant of the city.

According to Census Canada statistics specially compiled by the city’s Social Planning Department, the southeast quadrant has close to 25,000 seniors aged 65 and older, accounting for approximately one third of all seniors in Vancouver.

Park Board Chair Raj Hundal is calling for a portion of yesterday’s $70 million in unallocated infrastructure funds from the federal government to be directed towards the Killarney proposal.

These are the remarks that current Park Board chair Raj Hundal made before yesterday’s Board meeting:

The Park Board chair has spoken, and the conditions surrounding outgoing Park Board GM Susan Mundick's departure are now like water under the bridge

FACT OF THE DAY

In 2010, Vancouver had fewer than half the number of murders than it had in 2009.  There were nine homicides within Vancouver’s city limits, down from 19 killings the previous year.

Quote OF THE DAY

“Perhaps it was my silk dress or the new perfume I’ve been wearing lately. When I asked Suzanne Anton what her New Year’s resolution was, she replied, “To kiss a pretty girl!” and pecked me on the cheek.”  – Writer Emily Barca describing her encounter with the lone NPA City Councillor on New Year’s Eve.
